Gobernador de Tamaulipas Ignora de Donde se Pagara Agua a EU

Aunque México logró un nuevo acuerdo con los EU respecto a la deuda del agua,
el gobernador de Tamaulipas prefirió no opinar al respecto. Dijo desconocer
los detalles del nuevo convenio. Tamaulipas es uno de los estados que han
sido más afectados por la combinación de la
sequía y la deuda del agua.

En forma practicamente unánime, políticos y agricultores de Texas
expresaron su abierto rechazo al reciente acuerdo "interino" logrado
entre México y EU con respecto a la deuda del agua. Exigen al
gobierno del Presidente Bush ejercer presión firme y decidida contra
México.

Water Deal is a Slap in the Face, Texans Say

Anger and disappointment were the two distinctive reactions from
Texas to the recent "understanding" between the U.S. and Mexico
regarding the water debt. Governor Rick Perry demanded that the U.S.
federal government reject the agreement. He says Mexico is able to
deliver much more water than that promised.

Farmers Take Aim at Border Water Deal

Texas farmers and legislators expressed their disagreement with the
way both federal governments have handled the Mexican debt of 1.5
million acre-feet of water. In the agreement signed last week, Mexico
is committed to release 350,000 acre-feet of water over the next nine
months, but nothing is mentioned about the total amount of water owed.

El gobierno mexicano consideró que, con la firma del acuerdo relativo
a entregas de agua firmado en Washington la semana pasada, el país
está cumpliendo a cabalidad con el tratado de 1944. El más reciente
acuerdo establece una plan de pagos de agua unicamente para el
presente año.

Mexico to Give Water to United States

Federal officials in both the U.S. and Mexico informed the media that
they reached an agreement regarding water delivery from Mexico for
the current year. Mexico has the first nine months of 2003 to
deliver a total of 400,000 acre-feet of water to its northern
neighbor. Half of that amount, or 200,000 acre-feet of water, must be
delivered in January.
